Wildlife Without Borders launches a new project “Preservation of Snow Leopard as a Living Symbol of Megalopolis of Almaty and Kazakhstan”, supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as part of its Save Our Species Central Asia Initiative. This conservation initiative aims to protect mountain ecosystems around the metropolis of Almaty, where snow leopards (Panthera uncia) share their habitats with Almaty citizens.

Mountain landscapes around Almaty are home to this rare and endangered cat, and the ever-growing population of the city and the development of infrastructure force snow leopard to use inaccessible and inappropriate habitats. Essentially, snow leopard lives within the city border and its further existence largely depends on the citizens themselves. During the implementation of the project, we will strengthen the involvement of residents of Almaty in maintaining the stability of mountain ecosystems around the metropolis, forming an active civil position to preserve the living symbol of our city.

We will help create a positive-minded society that supports the ecosystem approach to addressing biodiversity conservation, where the inevitable urbanization process takes into account the needs of endangered species and the ecosystem as a whole.

Key partners of the project are the Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Snow Leopard Foundation, Marwell Wildlife, WWF-Russia and the UNESCO MAB National Committee.
