December 10-16, 2018, Wildlife Without Borders experts took part in the International Meeting on the Use of a Specialized Mobile Application for Monitoring Snow Leopard Populations, which was held at the Saylyugemsky National Park in the village of Kosh-Agach (Russian Federation). The meeting, organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), was attended by leading snow leopard experts from Russia and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WWF-Russia has developed and presented a unique app for smartphones called NextGIS, which makes field research of snow leopard much easier. The SMART technology, which operates on the basis of geographic information systems, simplifies the registration of field observations, and the results are automatically sent to a database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wildlife Without Borders experts intend to test this system in Kazakhstan in the near future, and then adapt it to the database available at the Snow Leopard Monitoring Center at the Institute of Zoology. The largest database on snow leopard, available at the Institute of Zoology, combines data collected by Institute’s scientists from all over Kazakhstan for more than 50 years!
